Izorline
Visits Cedros & Cowtown
Andy Cates
docked Red Rooster III at H&M Landing December 19
following the annual Izorline 10-day trip with 29
passengers, including chartermaster Norm Fujimoto of
Izorline.
“We fished at
Cedros and the 13 Spot, for near-limits of tuna and
yellowtail,” Cates said. “The lower banks were tough,
but on the second day there we chased fish with porpoise
for 47 yellowfin of 30 to 80 pounds. The next day the
water rolled over and went green but the dorado didn’t
care. We fished one day on the Spud for a single bite
from one 240-pounder.”
Joe Dubler of
Palmer AK got the big boy, which came in at 248.8 pounds
on the H&M scales. He got it with a mackerel bait on a
double hook rig under a balloon. He said he used
80-pound Izorline spectra on an Avet 4/0 and a Calstar
770 XXXH rod.
Ross Wojoe of
Mar Vista won second place for a 78.8-pounder. David
Reed of Ontario took third for a 68.8-pound yellowfin
and TJ Lee of Huntington Beach got fourth place for a
66.9-pound tuna. Nick LaFarga of Wilmington stood in
with the lineup group with his best-of-the-trip
46.8-pound yellowtail.

Dec. 17, 2011
Good evening folks What a nice day
of travel. No wind all day and a nice warm day overall. From
the reports above we are ready for another nice day
tomorrow.
Football tomorrow and the guys are
ready for a day of relaxing and watching the games. Sounds
like fun with good weather.
We will report again tomorrow
Andy Cates
Dec. 16, 2011
Good evening folks.
One bite today and one fish 240
pounds. We worked at it until 2:30 and then headed up. Joe
Dubler was the lucky angler that tied into the cow. Good
visual on decent size fish but only the one bite.
Now we are headed up and the weather
is great. I hope it holds up for the next 2 days.
Andy Cates
Dec. 15, 2011
Good evening folks.
Not much on the Tuna today.
Conditions turned for the worse with a lot of green water.
We did have a great day on Dorado that made up for the lack
of tuna. Floating objects pay off good down here, with nice
size dorado to go with full speed action. We have one more
day and we are trying the lower banks again in hopes of Jack
pot fish tomorrow.
The weather got really nice and we
are enjoying it on the anchor as we speak.
We will report again tomorrow
Andy Cates
Dec. 14, 2011
Good evening folks.
Yesterday was a frustrating day with
sign of fish but no bites. Literally no bites. We left that
area and started offshore. We found an area that offered 30
to 80 pound tuna. Pretty good action with 47 decent size
fish for the day. We headed up early in need of bait and
will be in the bay tonight trying for mackerel. It could be
a long night. We need bait. Hopefully it bites and we can
get back on that tuna first thing in the morning.
Andy Cates
Dec. 13, 2011
Good morning folks.
Yesterday was another great day.
Different fish though. We had action from daylight untill 3
in the afternoon.
The same grade of fish as we have
seen on the upper end of the Ridge, but biting. Yellows were
mixed in as well to add more color. No exotic bottom fish.
In our situation we can now focus on bigger fish, Everyone
already has plenty of fish just a few big fish would go a
long way. We will be on the lower banks today. It sounds
like sign of better fish just has not been biting. The
Dorado are still around so we may get a chance at those as
well.
4 days on the lower banks. Wish us
luck.

Dec. 11, 2011
Good evening folks
The overnight stay at Cedros paid
off well with great yellowtail fishing all morning.
Decent size fish with the action
that was perfect for the first day of fishing. Yo-yo jigging
and flyline with good surface action made for a classic
morning. Things died after lunch and we pointed it south for
the Ridge. We will be there first light and spend the day
targeting action based fishing before we head down to the
Lower Banks.
Weather is good and looks good for a
few days. It will be nice to get into some warmer weather.

Dec. 10, 2011
Good afternoon folks. We just left
on our annual Izorline sponsored 10 day trip. We have
had a couple of raffles and Tady , Calstar ,Mustad and
Izorline were the primary sponsors.
The weather is great. We are going
to take advantage of the weather and start fishing tomorrow.
Wake up at Cedros and spend the day after Yellows and then
head down to the Ridge. With the lunar eclipse and clear
skies the morning was quite a sight. Not to mention a great
breakfast and hot coffee to go with.
We will report again tomorrow.

Mark Moffat of
San Diego is a regular on the Red Rooster III, with a
best-ever tuna of 285 pounds. He nearly beat that fish
on his latest trip when he weighed one at 279.6 pounds.
Then he weighed two more at 225.2 and 214.6 pounds,
which gave him 700 pounds for the three tuna. The big
one won first place on a nice trip with skipper Andy
Cates to the Buffer Zone, which produced a total of 13
cows, tuna over 200 pounds.
Mark was one
of 21 anglers aboard, and told dock reporter Bill
Roecker “I got bit on the drift after a long soak. The
fish was very sluggish at first, and then took half my
spool. At the end he came up on the port bow.”
Mark baited a
large mackerel on a 10/0 Mustad 7691 hook, tied to
130-popund Izorline and 130-pound Line One spectra. He
fished with an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 6455
rod.
Hans Rueckert
of Granada Hills is another long-time (25 years) Rooster
rider, and he took second place for his 228.6-pound
yellowfin. He also had one at 200.8 pounds. He said the
big one bit a mackerel on a 10/0 7691 hook. He fished
with 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One spectra
on an Accurate ATD 50 W reel and a Calstar 765 H rod.
Chang Liu of
Oceanside won third place for a 223.2-pounder. He got
another fish that went 207 pounds. He said he took the
big one on a sardine and a 7/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu
hook. He used 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and
130-pound Izorline spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and
a six-foot Truline rod.
Todd Cameron
of Long Beach got tuna of 218, 215 and 203 pounds. He
fished mackerel baits on 10/0 VMC hooks, and used
130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon and 130-pound
Line One spectra on a Tiagra 50 W reel and a Calstar 770
XXH rod.
Charles Tanaka
of San Francisco caught a 210-pound tuna with a sardine
on a ringed Owner Super Mutu in 6/0 size. He fished with
130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One
spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 770 XXH
rod.
Hemzeh
Abdelmuti of Huntington Beach was another gold-touched
angler on the Rooster trip. He got a 206 and a
203.8-pound tuna. He fished sardines on 6/0 ringed Super
Mutu hooks. He used 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon,
130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One spectra on a
Tiagra 50 reel modified by Cal Sheets and a Super Seeker
2 x 4 rod.
“The big one
took an hour and a half,” he remarked. “My best fish
before this trip was a 45-pound tuna.”
Dec. 5, 2011
This morning
so far we have , 21 tuna Mark Moffat 270 lbs his
third fish over 200lbs for the trip. Chang caught a
220lbs this morning. Todd landed his third fish over
200lbs for this trip. Currently our biggest fish 270lbs
We will fish
till noon today, then start heading home! We are
concerned about getting home on time. Yesterday was
heavy wind, which made for poor fishing, but today is
much nicer!!

Dec. 4, 2011
25 knots of
wind very tough conditions. We had 5 tuna, 197lbs,
193lbs. It was very difficult to fish with these
conditions.

nice grade fish 130-225lbs
1 drift for a
dozen fish 3 fish are over 200lbs. although the wind
started to come up, which made the drifting a little
faster then we’d like. “
Dec. 2, 2011
“Yesterday it
started off very good in the morning. With about 24
tuna, biggest being at about 195 lbs. It got a little
tough in the afternoon and early evening with heavy
shark problems. But today it seems to be going better
with already 6 Tuna, hopefully throughout the rest of
the day, it will stay the same. Report more later. Andy

Nov. 30, 2011
“Scratch drift
fishing today. It has been nice weather today. It was a
bit slow yesterday, but were able to catch about a dozen
tuna.
Today, we had
30 Tuna. Two of them taped at 215lbs & 220lbs. Hoping
for a couple more chances before the end of the day.
Looks like we
may be putting together a good fishing trip!

Fishing report.
Big Tuna Cake,
Wahoo Frosting
Paul Sweeney
and I returned from a wonderful ten-day flyback trip
late Sunday night, November 20. The Accurate trip with
chartermaster Jack Nilsen filled the boat with big tuna,
a sweet cake frosted with a good morning of wahoo
fishing, in weather that was just as tasty. The storm
approaching San Diego as we left passed over us on the
way down with no more discomfort than a day of rain, and
turned to clear skies and subsiding seas that flattened
more with each of the five days we spent fishing off the
newly greened island of Clarion. As though to remind us
of our luck, we flew into LAX in a rainstorm, and down
to San Diego in the tail end of another dousing of the
Southwest’s most precious resource.
Many of the 23
anglers aboard got the best tuna of their fishing
careers, and that included Paul and I. He picked off an
estimated 170-pounder on the kite using the Accurate ATD
80 reel they call “The Tractor,” and I saw my first cow
hit the deck. It wouldn’t have arrived there had I not
had the assistance of second skipper Derek Waldman, who
bailed me out of a couple of near-spoolings. That was
the fish from Heck at the least, and it made seven long
runs on my 100-pound gear, three of which allowed me to
view the end of the more than 500 yards of new Kanzen
spectra on my Accurate 12. Tom Ferrari also was my
much-appreciated big fish saver the next day.
On our way
south, many wonderful prizes were given to all anglers,
and a drawing was held for some expensive items (rods
from Calstar and Seeker, 500-yard spools of Kanzen and
packets of 30, 40 and 50-pound Seaguar, Red Rooster III
prints from Peter J, an AFTCO harness and Socorro belt,
copies of At The Rail, etc.) More goodies like Mustad
hooks, Salas iron jigs and Zuckers trolling jigs and
calendars went into another packet for everyone.
There were
plenty of big fish for all on the trip; yellowfin of up
to the taped 274-pounder caught by “Big Al” Waldbridge
of Ojai, once a high school basketball star there and
now a successful farmer of avocados and other produce.
It was his first cow. The weights mentioned here will
become official after the Rooster arrives November 23
with most of the long range fleet, just in time for
Thanksgiving.
The next
apparent best tuna was taped at 244, for rookie Denny
Hill of Santa Clarita, under the wing of the trip’s best
angler, Brandon Hayward, the saltwater editor at WON.
Brandon’s ability to hook and handle big tuna on a
seven-foot Calstar with 100-pound spectra and a couple
feet of flourocarbon inspired me to try a similar rig,
and right away I found it effective.
I’d given up
on the concept about ten years ago, because the heavy
shaking of big tuna on the initial runs “like to tore my
arms out of their sockets.” But the new longer “rail
rods” with lighter tips seems to make a big difference,
and the spectra-to-flourocarbon combo gets bit like your
best hopes. I’m sold, thanks to Brandon.
My own rig
made use of a new Super Seeker 1 X 3 rod wrapped for me
by Pat Doyle, an Accurate 12 with Seaguar Premier
100-pound at the end of the 100-pound Kanzen I was
trying out, and a super-strong Mustad Demon 4X circle
hook in 6/0 size, hooked in a sardine. I tried the ‘dine
nose, back and belly-hooked and got bit all ways, though
I still favor the nose-hook as the usual method for
soaking at a distance. I got one fish and saw a couple
of other hooked “on the grind” that way.
Captain Andy
Cates put us on the fish every day, and recommended
fishing 100-pound line and leader on the sardines and
130-pound gear for bigger baits like mackerel. They bit
each dawn, at mid-morn and again in the afternoon and at
sunset. It made for drift fishing in great style, with
drifts lasting from 20 minutes to a couple of hours,
before we’d run upwind again to start over. The worst
thing about fishing sardines was contending with the
juvenile boobies that pounced on baits they could see or
reach.
Most anglers
compensated for the birds by putting a two-ounce egg
sinker two or three feet up from the hook. Dropping the
bait in close to the boat was another option to avoid
bird strikes. Sharks were not much of a hassle, I’m
pleased to report. We lost only a few fish to them, and
they didn’t seem interested in the small baits.
Cleaning some
for meals and purging a couple of big fish demonstrated
they were eating lots of pelagic red crab, along with
small rockfish and a few elongated baits, along with our
sardines. The water was a fine 78 to 79 degrees, clear
blue-purple and just right for yellowfin.
We spent our
last morning fishing for wahoo to squeeze in among the
tuna plugging a hold of refrigerated sea water, after we
finished off two brine holds of fish caught earlier. I
started out with a hot hand, getting the first jig fish
on a silver Sea Strike 33 and then another right away. I
wasn’t so lucky on the next one, which spit the jig. But
I was more than pleased to get that brace for the fresh
hold, and didn’t lose the jig, which Waldman had
attached for me with 40-pound Izorline XXX with a double
line Bimini knot. Three strikes, two wahoo on the deck
and no jig loss; that’s about as good as it gets for me.
I took a look
at Hayward, fishing a 9-foot Ulua, who’d haywired a
short piece of wire to his spectra, and tricked several
skins to attack his Salas 7X “Python” or a “Gay Soldier”
with a “normal” slow retrieve on the slide. I saw one
appear from the side and grab the jig in the center. A
look at the jig after the fish was decked confirmed my
observation, which Brandon had missed because he turned
his head at the moment of the attack. He got that one
and several others with the same method, and I’ll now
refer to him affectionately as “Haywire.” His method
will be something else for me to try on my next trip
into the waters where the skinnies live.
Others got
skinnies on bait, Raiders and other long, heavy jigs. We
had numerous stops, some initiated by short strikes,
which produced nothing on the trolled jigs, but proved
wahoo were waiting for dropback offerings. The Marauders
did their usual good job of producing skinnies for the
trollers.
Fishing in the
Buffer Zone off Clarion Island on a ten-day excursion
with the flyback option is a smart option. We were there
because the tuna on the southern banks weren’t biting
well when we left port. As skipper Cates said, “Drift
fishing was classic. We had fish of 80 to 140 pounds
every morning, and 120 to 180 pounds in the afternoon. I
don’t see why more people don’t do this. Five days of
catching big tuna puts a lot of fish on the boat, with
just about all the fishing you can take, and you don’t
have to make that long ride home.”
It wouldn’t be
proper for me to end this story with a grateful thanks
to this trip’s sponsors: Accurate, AFTCO, Calstar, Five
Star, Izorline, Mustad, Salas, Seaguar, Seeker,
Sportsman’s Seafood, Zuckers and others. Jack Nilsen
gets kudos for putting the trip on and embellishing it
with over $50,000 worth of loaner reels and rods. Jack
was assisted by Leo Reihsen and Gary Gillingham, who
helped any and all anglers who needed it.
I’d also like
to applaud Cates and his fine crew of Derek Waldman, Tom
Ferrari, Fernando Calleros, Julio Ochoa and chefs Rick
Shedd and Chapman Murphey. The food was excellent, right
on, and with their help I was for once proud to return
without gaining unwanted weight.
We gave the
Sportsman’s award of my book At The Rail, a copy of the
IGFA yearbook, a new Salas 7X and a Five Star discount
certificate to Bob Peterson of San Diego, who brought
his 18-year-old son Caleb on his first long range trip.
Caleb wanted a 100-pounder. The tuna obliged him beyond
his hopes, repeatedly, and made him a new long ranger, a
young man who’ll be back, again and again, without
doubt. Bob was also rewarded with first cow, taped at
222 pounds.
So what do I
really think about this trip on the Red Rooster III?
Delicious.
Nov. 19, 2011
Good morning folks.
We finished off the trip yesterday
and packed it up. Great fishing again and great weather . No
outstanding fish the last couple of days but nice grade up
to 190 pounds. Classic drift fishing. What a great trip.
We will be in Cabo tomorrow morning

Nov. 18, 2011
Good evening folks.
We had another nice day with 41 tuna
for the day. Biggest fish today about 190 pounds. We didn't
hook any bigger fish that we know of. It was a bit slower
today but only compared to the last few days. Really a nice
day of fishing with great weather. We have most of the day
tomorrow and then we will head over to Cabo. It does look
like nice weather for the ride in. We will get a new update
tomorrow.

Nov. 16, 2011
Good evening folks We had another great
day. 47 tuna with 4 fish taped out over 200 pounds.
Bob Peterson with his personal best
225. Joe Arimitsu with a 204 and lost a bigger one just
below gaff. Tim Coomes with a 205 and Bill Roecker with a
204. They were close to the 200 lb. mark and even if they
don't make it, its still great fish. All day action with
great weather.2 more days left . Maybe we will get chances
at a couple more decent fish.
Andy Cates
Nov. 15, 2011
Good evening folks. We had a great day
today. 54 tuna and what a great grade of fish. Average is
about 150 pounds with some bigger and some smaller. Fish up
into the 190's and one fish 245 caught by Denny Hill. His
personal best before that was a 140 lb. he caught yesterday.
He made a big jump scoring that cow. We did have a couple
other chances at possibly cow's but no luck. Maybe tomorrow.
What great fishing so far.
Andy Cates
Nov. 14, 2011
Good evening folks. We had a fun day at
the Island. Things started slow but when we got on the fish
it picked up with long drifts on fish from 120 to 180
pounds. The morning brought smaller fish 60 to 90 pounders
but also brought this 270 pound tuna caught by Alan
Walbridge. We did hook another big one but it fell off. No
daily JackPot today but Bill Roecker had a great first tuna
prize that included a 5 star certificate . Seagar line and
Salas jigs. Tomorrow we may have another pot. Oh Yah, Jack
gave a ten pack of Salas jigs for the first tuna on the
deck. Sweet!
50 tuna today and hoping for more
tomorrow.

Nov. 12, 2011
Good evening folks. It looks like we
just missed the storm. With smooth seas and a nice ride.
Rigged up the Tuna gear today. Got a few other things ready.
Still nice weather and looking forward to our last day of
travel. That will be tomorrow.
Have a good night

Nov. 11, 2011
Good evening folks.
Our first day of travel brought some
great raffle items. Accurate sponsored the trip with many
others. We have Bill Roecker out with us this trip.
Hopefully we get some nice fishing and weather for some
great pictures. heading down has been great weather. a
little rain but flat calm seas.
Tomorrow we start rigging up and do
a Tuna seminar to get the day started. We handed out some of
the loaner Accurate reels and Calstar and Seeker rods today.
All the guys are anxious to get fishing.
We will report again tomorrow.

troll-a-thon. We ended up down by Mag bay and went in for
bait last night. That worked out good, we caught plenty of
bait and we are ready for today.
Today was one stop shopping on nice

Two For Loftus
& Martin
Andy Cates
brought Red Rooster III home to H&M Landing October 30
following the annual Loftus & martin 14-day trip to
Hurricane Bank and Clarion Island’s offshore waters.
There were 23 anglers aboard, and they had a very good
catch of large tuna from 90 to 268 pounds.
The big
268-pound yellowfin was caught by John Wichmann of
Oceanside, who used a fresh Super Seeker 6463 XXH rod
he’d won in a raffle aboard the Rooster on the way
south. It was custom-wrapped by Smitty G., he said.
“My fifth cow
and the best one yet,” said Wichmann. “He was the
strongest one so far. I was only out with my bait maybe
three minutes in water that was full of sharks. My last
ten bites were all sharks. This guy took off like a
freight train, and he stayed outside during the hour and
a half fight.”
John said he
used a Mustad 9/0 7691 hook on 130-pound Blackwater
fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline spectra on a Penn 50
VSW reel and his new rod.
Terry Robb, on
his second long range trip, bagged the second-place
fish, a 214-pounder. He said it bit on a sardine and a
9/0 Mustad 7691 hook tied to 130-pound Maxima
fluorocarbon and 130-pound Maxima line on a an Accurate
ATD 50 reel and a Black Steel Seeker 6460 XXH rod.
“I got him in
20 minutes,” said Terry. “He came up in the port
corner.”
Fred Wakefield
of Santa Ana won third place for a 197.6-pound yellowfin
tuna.
The anglers
spent their last day of fishing at the San Benitos
Islands, where they caught bass from the boat’s skiffs
and a nice bunch of yellows from the big boat, noted
skipper Cates.

Good evening folks.
We spent the day travelling up. The
weather was a little bumpy but really not that bad. We will
be up on the Ridge tomorrow to try for a little variety and
then move up the coast.
Hopefully the weather gets a little
better.

Good evening folks.
Yesterday was a long day releasing
fish and not getting any chances at big ones. There was
decent sign of better fish on black porpoise but no bites. A
couple of good schools of non trophy size tuna, just not
what we were after.
The weather is nice after a full day
of rain and thunder and lightning. Nice weather now as we
run up. We are going to finish off up the beach maybe the
ridge or maybe Cedros for a day and then head it home.
We will report again tomorrow

Oct. 23, 2011
Good evening folks. We have been off
line and but now have strong signal. We will see how long it
last down here.
We had great fishing out at the
Bank. 130 to 180 pound fish with a few bigger. Biggest fish
out there was 205 caught by Terry Robb. The weather was ok
and we had a long ride into the Island. It is nice in the
lee right now but had rain almost all day. Biggest fish
today was 270 caught by John Wichman.
We will try again tomorrow for Jack
Pot fish. The sharks are bad and makes it very frustrating
but the guys are hanging in there. Just a couple more big
ones and we would be stoked.. We will report again tomorrow.

We have been
having a very successful trip so far! The fishing has been
very good! Yesterday, we caught about 35 Yellowfin Tuna.
Today, we have so far 50 YFT. All between 100-190lbs. One at
205lbs. The weather has been fair, no hurricanes, and no
sharks!
Unfortunately, we
have terrible SAT reception, therefore getting the report to
you has been a struggle.
We will report

Good morning folks. So far the ride down
has been great. We have had a couple of great raffles and
started tuna rigging today. We had a birthday party for John
Loftus yesterday. Larry bought him a 275 dollar bottle of
Cognac. The present from the crew was a little more subtle. A
pair of dikes. But worthy anyway. A great night for football.
And a great ride down.

“The First Wave:”
Super Skins Coming In
Andy Cates brought the
Seaguar/Newell/Yo-Zuri/Catchy Tackle/Hayabusa and
FishingVideos.com trip with 28 anglers and chartermaster
Richard Hightower home to H&M Landing October 15 after a great
eight-day trip with 28 anglers. The group fished on The Ridge
and briefly at 170 miles, finding tuna at the short distance and
yellowtail and wahoo on The Ridge.
“This is the first
wave of superhoos,” he told dock reporter Bill Roecker. “We’re
eager for more!”
The best superhoo
weighed 79 pounds on the landing’s certified scales. It was
caught by retired fireman John Stuemke of San Diego on a
home-made black and orange bomb.
Halloween must be
close, because many of the big skins taken on the trip showed a
preference for jigs of those colors. Hightower showed a bit of
his old wahoo form by taking several on jigs, on Catchy Tackle
bombs with a gold head and black and orange skirts, and also on
some Catchy Tackle Sea Strike 33 jigs in gold and pink and
silver and blue.
Dan Newell of La
Mirada won first place for his first wahoo, a 67-pounder that
ate another Catchy Tackle spinner bomb with a gold head and
pink, purple and black colors.
He said he used
50-pound Yo-Zuri Hybrid line on a Newell 533 reel and a
seven-foot rod, defeating the gator-like critter in 20 minutes.
Phil Faubert of
Huntington Beach won second place for a 65-pound ‘hoo, and
Rooster regular Gary Grimaud of ocean Beach won third place for

the troll, including the 78.6-pounder caught by David Carillo of

Great weather and aquarium wide open fishing on Yellowfin tuna. Nice
fish too, 18 to 25 pounders. What a great way to finish, right to

Wow what a nice way to end the trip.

Good evening folks. We had a slow day at
Cedros, Excellent sign of yellowtail just not the size we were
after. The guys released some in the morning and then we spent the
rest of the day trying different shallows and kelp lines in hopes of
bigger yellows. The day ended at Benitos where we had a huge North
west swell that kind of turned the Island over. The water was foamy
and ripped up. We have nice weather and finishing offshore with the
lack of anything else to do. Maybe we will bump into something good.
We have the weather for it.

Oct. 12, 2011
Good evening folks. We had a great day of
variety fishing. One anchor job offered action until we left at
3:00. Yellowfin tuna, dorado and yellowtail. Everyone had plenty of
that by the afternoon and we started heading up. The weather is
great today and we will be at Cedros tomorrow. It will be a nice
relaxing day and hopefully a few standout yellows to seal the trip
up. Maybe even a seabass or two.
Nice weather and great 8 day trip fishing.

Oct. 11, 2011
Good evening folks. We had a nice morning on
yellowtail and then trolled it up for a couple of strikes. More
traffic today and less wahoo but we stayed busy on Dorado and
yellows. We spent a lot of the time on the move hoping for strikes
but they didn't come. Anyway we are moving up and hoping for more
action and variety tomorrow. Some school size tuna would be great
and of course wahoo. We will see,

Good evening folks. What a surprise for us
today. 36 jumbo ridge wahoo. All day action with epic battles on big
Wahoo. The guys had at it with the casting jigs and Bombs. Certainly
a great surprise. Yellowtail fishing was nothing short of great and
some Dorado and a few Grouper to make a classic variety ridge day.
We are going to try it again tomorrow and
hope more wahoo move in with this full moon.

Good evening folks.
Tough day here today. We spent the day
offshore outside the ridge and came up with a couple of kelps with
very little on them. We had one wahoo in the morning and hooked a
couple others on kelps but with a few dorado that was it. A lot of
off colored water. Plenty warm just greenish. Not good. We got that
out of our system and will be on the ridge tomorrow. Hopefully that
goes better.

Good evening folks.
We left yesterday on our annual Newell/
Hyabusa /Seagar 8 day trip. As usual we had a great giveaway and
raffle that included tackle and reels. Also shirts and hats. A nice
welcome for the guys from the sponsors. Today has been a nice day of
travel with a seminar in the morning and rigging the rest of the
day.
We might make a quick stop at Benitos just
to break up the ride and be fishing offshore tomorrow looking for
Dorado on kelps and whatever else we can come up with. The weather
is getting better all day and tomorrow looks to be flat calm. A
perfect setup to look offshore.
We will report again tomorrow.

Good Afternoon Folks, We had a good day of
fish yesterday at the rocks. With a mixed bag of yellowfin,
yellowtail, dorado and wahoo. The tuna range from eighteen to twenty
two pounds with a couple that are seventy to a hundred pounds. The
wahoo are thirty five to sixty pounds. The yellowtail and dorado you
had to weed through. We fished for a couple hours in the morning and
are heading home. We decided to stay here sense it was the only game
in town for tuna. This morning the water rolled over and we had a
sample of all the species. The weather is ok but is suppose to get
choppy. Wish us luck on the ride home. We'd also like to thank Sunny

we moved further down the ridge in hopes more steady action wish us
luck. We will report back later.

Not exactly a great finisher. Scattered jig
strikes on yellowfin and only one school that did not bite. Kind of
a long haul back up here for that, but you never know. We have had
back to back finishers up here and I think that the fish up here are
coming to an end. Fortunately for us all of our trips now are longer
voyages to the southern waters. Still we had a great trip with
plenty of fish in which most of it came from below Cedros.

Good
evening folks. Yesterday we had action in the afternoon on yellows
and tuna.
About 100 yellows and 40 tuna. Tuna were 12 to 25
pounds and yellows about the same. We looked offshore in the
morning, with the wind and green water it didn't work out.
Today
was a whole different story with small tuna and yellows in the
morning and a move that brought good biting yellows and great
Dorado.
Aquarium style dorado
fishing and fish up to 30 pounds. Beautiful fish and biting.

Izorline Trip Scores
Joe D’Acquisto docked Red
Rooster III at H&M Landing September 18 at the end of a six-day trip
sponsored by Izorline.
“We fished three days
offshore,” said Joe, “and a day each at Cedros and Guadalupe
Islands. We were just about limited out on tuna and yellowtail.”
Kent Fukumoto of Santa Ana
won first place for a 75.4-pound yellowfin tuna, the only one of 11
big tuna hooked at Guadalupe that escaped the hungry sharks nearby.
He said he bagged it with a sardine on a 3/0 ringed Super Mutu hook
on 50-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 50-pound Izorline and
100-pound Izorline spectra. He fished with a Trinidad 30 reel and a
Calstar 700 H rod. The fight lasted a half-hour, said Kent and the
sharks were chasing his fish when it was gaffed aboard.
Andy Perez of Anaheim won
second place for a 26.2-pound tuna. Ian Burke of Lakeside got a
23.8-pound yellowtail for third place, and Joshua Finger of
Scottsdale, AZ won the coveted trolling jacket for an 18-pound
yellowfin he got with a cedar plug.

Sorry for not reporting yesterday. We had a really
tuff day we had four bluefin for our efforts. We saw lots of fish they just
didn't want to play. Today was another story we had a great day so good we
had to drive away from them biting as we where out of time. We will be
checking in to Ensenada tonight. Then going to us customs in the morning. If
all goes well we should be at the dock between six and seven. We turn

wide-open fishing on yellowfin and bluefin tuna offshore, excellent fishing
for yellowtail at Cedros Island, and wide-open offshore again on the way
back, ending up with near-limits around. And we had great weather.”
Darren Sato of Irvine jigged up
the winning yellowtail, a 31-pounder that struck his blue and white Salas 6X
Jr. at the big island. He told dock reporter Bill Roecker he fished with
40-pound Izorline, 60-pound Izorline spectra on an Avet JX reel and a

Good Evening Folks We had another great day of fishing
offshore today and are on our way home. We had a mix bag of fish again today.
The majority being yellowfin, with also a couple handfuls of dorado and bluefin
to go with it. The morning was slow but by lunch time it was game on if
you found the right school. The only bad thing about this body of fish is that
it keeps going south and not north. We will be in tomorrow around nine or nine
thirty. The weather is nice but not grease.

Good Evening Folks. We had a great day in the offshore
ground. We had dorado, bluefin and yellowfin. The average size is sixteen pounds
with a few better ones. Wish us luck for tomorrow as we will be offshore again
and also hope the weather stays the same or comes down to grease calm.

O’ The Morning
Phil Bell of Playa del Rey and the LA Rod & Reel Club had a pretty good start to
one of his days aboard the Red Rooster III with skipper Andy Cates when the boat
stopped to fish overnight at Cedros Island on a five-day Larry Brown charter.
“I was sleeping in the galley about four a.m. when the cook woke me up to say
that deckhand Tom had just got a whopper yellowtail. He gaffed it himself. So I
got up and went outside, and got a big white seabass, a huge yellowtail and a
thresher shark,” said Phil to dock reporter Bill Roecker at H&M Landing
September 2. He was helped to display his fish by his son Andy of Coos Bay, OR.
Phil won first place for his big “biscuit,” caught on a mackerel on a dropper
loop sunk with eight ounces of weight. He said he used 60-pound Izorline and
80-pound Power Pro spectra on an Avet LX reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6465 H
rod. The white seabass weighed 51 pounds, a sleek trophy in itself. His big
yellowtail weighed 43 pounds.
Larry Brown of Playa del Rey won second place for a 39.4-pound yellowtail. He
wanted to thanks some of his sponsors: Avet Izorline, Owner and Phenix Rods.
David Leffman of El Paso won third place for a 36.6-pound yellowtail.
Lisa Kenny of San Diego got her best yellowtail ever, a 32-pounder, and posed
with Captain Cates.
Sept. 1, 2011
Good afternoon folks.
We finished off today with a great stop on Bluefin and yellowfin. Got what we
needed and now are on our way home. The weather last night was poor and going up
the beach we hope we find a better ride.
We will be in at 800 in the morning
and the boat leaves on a 3 day. The prospects look good especially if the
weather comes down.

Good morning folks
Yesterday we had a great day of yellowtail fishing.
Flat calm no wind and
hot. Most fish from 15 to 22 pounds . No stand outs. Very fun drift fishing.
So far this morning we have a few nice yellows up to 40 pounds and one White
Seabas about 50 pounds. So far they look to be the Jack pot fish . But time will
tell.
Great weather and we will be offshore tomorrow to finish a great trip

Good
afternoon folks
We had an excellent first day with wide open Bluefin and yellowfin tuna.
What a great way to get started. The weather was perfect and now we're heading
down to Cedros for hopefully some yellowtail action.
We had a great raffle yesterday and Larry Brown and the passengers came up with
1600 dollars for donations. All items were raffled and appreciated.

Andy Cates returned Red Rooster III to her berth at H&M Landing August 28
following a seven-day Izorline trip with owner Steve Ichinokuchi aboard, along
with 18 other anglers.
Cates reported the day before: “So far today has
worked out with Bluefin, Yellowfin and a couple of Albacore. Things have changed
with flat calm weather and all day drifts.
The start of the stop was wide
open and then tapered off to a pick. You get flurries on fish as you drift.
Light line is best with 25 and 30-pound line with Seaguar flourocarbon. The fish
are small so a small hook works out as well. We are going to drift until 300 and
then head it for home. Hopefully we can get a few more hits.
“Epic
yellowfin fishing in the afternoon,” he reported later. “We drove away from them
and headed home; an epic ending of a great trip.”
Cates told
Roecker, “We got our trophies at The Rocks. Fishing was good on The Ridge, and
prospects for tuna look good between there and Punta Eugenia, maybe on the same
fish that were on the Petrel Bank earlier. Yesterday we had near-limits on tuna
of combined species.”
Paul Oster of Mammoth Lakes won first place
and the Izorline Trophy for a 109-pound yellowfin. He said it came to him after
biting a sardine on a 3/0 ringed Owner Mutu hook tied to 40-pound Seaguar
fluorocarbon leader. He used 40-pound Izorline and 80-pound Line One spectra on
an Accurate 665 reel and a Calstar 760 ML rod.
Ceasar Requindin of
San Marcos won second place and the Coveted Trolling Jacket for a 99-pound tuna
and one a great deal smaller, about 14 pounds. Mike Hobbick of Fullerton won
third place for a 98.2-pound tuna.
Mike said he had thrown his
very expensive, foreign-made reel into the water after its drag system failed on
the one fish. It was still attached to the rod, he said, because the nuts
holding it were locked jam-tight.
“I wrote a letter about my
feelings to the company,” he stated.

Good evening folks.
We made a few stops this morning and picked up a few yellows. With what we had
we left before lunch and started heading up. We will be in the Bluefin grounds
tomorrow . I hope we can get lucky and finish off with some action. It would
make a nice finish to a great trip Andy Cates
Aug 25, 2011
Good evening folks.
We started off this morning with epic yellowtail fishing. Typical ridge yellow
fishing at it's finest. We did see some tuna which was good but not biting.
Hopefully some tuna fill in there soon. The water and conditions were plenty
good. We ran up the line and looked for kelps and struck out on that and hit a
few areas of porpoise for nothing. We decided to go up and mess around at Cedros
tomorrow mostly just to put us in position for the Bluefin and yellowfin area
the next day. It sounds like the weather up there is coming down and should be
nice for us . Hopefully the fish bite and we can end with more action.
Andy Cates
Aug. 24, 2011
Good
afternoon folks.
More of the same here at the Rocks. very challenging
fishing. We have 18 tuna and 10 yellowtail. Half of the tuna are nice fish , up
to 100lbs but very hard to catch. Between the light line and sharks it is hard
to stay at it.
It looks like we may leave here this afternoon and head in for
some ridge action. That way everyone can get a bite. And yes it is still windy.
Andy Cates
Aug 23, 2011
Good evening folks
We got in at the Rocks at 1100 and got the anchor down.
No jig strikes on our tour around the rocks.
We picked 16 tuna and had a
tough day with dragging anchor. A lot of wind mid day. 6 Tuna from 30 to 80
pounds the other ten 15 to 25lbs. Fish were lost by sharks and light line
failures.
We decided to try it again tomorrow and if
it is poor we will go offshore and look for kelps.
We
will report again tomorrow.

Aug. 22, 2011
Good morning folks. We left yesterday on a
longer summer trip. A 7 day sponsored by Izorline. Steve and Jim are out
with us and looking for a nice week of fishing.
We are headed down and bypassing the Yellowfin /
Bluefin area . Things sounded a little spotty in that area but still
fish to be had.
We are headed down and make a decision on
starting point this afternoon.
Andy Cates
Under A Paddy
The only albacore of the trip
and the first longfin of the summer for Red Rooster III came to
long-time regular angler Ron Hirao of Huntington Beach on a three-day
trip with skipper Andy Cates that returned to H&M Landing August 21. Ron
won first place in the jackpot for the rare critter.
“We had another fantastic day
of fishing,” Cates reported the day before docking. “The yellowfin
season is on. Same grade of fish 15 to 22 pounds, maybe a couple bigger.
The action was great with if you can believe this. We had 46 jigstrikes
in the last two days, with four people on a trolling team. A lot of
stopping and going mixed in with wide open, in-the-corner stops.”
Hirao’s jackpot winning
albacore weighed 35.2 pounds, and bit a sardine on a tiny size four
Owner Flyliner hook tied to 20-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon. He fished
with 25-pound Ande line and 65-pound Power Pro spectra on an Avet HX
reel and a Phenix 700 H rod.
Armando Castillo of Oxnard won
second place for a 26.6-pound yellowfin, and the coveted trolling jacket
for a 22-pounder. Tony Gonzalez of Monterey Park won third place for a
22.4-pound open water yellowfin tuna.

Good afternoon folks. So far today we have had a
great day of fishing. Yellowfin tuna, Dorado and yellowtail. The Yellowfin
seems to be a new area and a nice spread of fish. Perfect for these shorter

Captain Joe D’Acquisto backed Red
Rooster III into her slip August 18 after a five-day West Coast Anglers trip
with co-charter masters David Rosenthal and Robert Peterson and 17 other
anglers aboard. They fished offshore, at Cedros Island and up the beach,
said Joe.
Three halibut were caught, two by
charter master Rosenthal and one by Peterson, when the boat tried inshore up
the beach.
James Pollard of Grand Terrace won
first place for his 40-pound Bluefin tuna. He told dock reporter Bill

nice school of small Bluefin. We got a school at 9:30 and drifted until 1:00
catching fish the whole time. Starting out wide open and then tapering off to 4
to 6 going for hours. Certainly what we need to finish the trip off. There
is a little small yellowfin to go with but the attraction is definitely the
Bluefin. We did see bigger ones around the outside of the school but only caught
one 35 pounder. That one went in the galley for Sushi.

Good evening folks. Today was pretty tough. Conditions
went sour on the south end and sent us scrambling around looking for sign of
fish. We ended up at Benitos late and didn't have that great of fishing. Heavy
impact from the sea lions. A lot of looking around and came to the conclusion

Good morning folks.
Yesterday offshore kelp fishing was pretty epic.
With all the yellow you wanted and then scratching 64
Dorado and 10 tuna in the afternoon. The only bummer was the big south swell and
wind from the northwest. But all in all it was a great day. Aquarium style
fishing and everyone had a great day. I can't remember that good of kelp
fishing. You do have to go a long way though.

climatic but tomorrow we have hopes for another area that may also produce
Dorado. The weather is nice and looking forward to a busy day.

We are headed out on another five day trip. Looking for
some action offshore tomorrow. It does look like the weather will be improving.
A big hurricane down south will make nice weather up here for us. Sounds like

Bluefin Jim’s ‘Tail Trip
Joe D’Acquisto docked Red Rooster III
at H&M Landing august 3 after the seventh annual Bluefin Jim five-day charter
with 32 anglers and chartermaster Jim Casey. They found an excellent catch of
bigger yellowtail at Cedros Island, and brought home near-limits.
“We fished offshore and at Cedros,”
said D’Acquisto. “We had excellent fishing at Cedros for average-size
yellowtail.”
“The weather was bad for tuna,” noted
Bluefin Jim. “Although we did get some yellows and dorado off kelps. The best of
our fishing at Cedros was in the lee at the south end near the salt plant. It
was nice there. The big ones bit all day on the second day. It was a steady
pick, mostly on bait. Thanks to Joe for a great trip! We released about 40
yellowtail.”
“Woody” Wood of Highland won first

the rest are forty pounds. We are stoked to have great weather and good fishing.

yellows up the beach. Good grade of fish as well. Nice weather and thankfully
staying somewhat steady on decent yellows.
We will be in tomorrow at 9:00. We are going to fish to
the last minute and try and catch more yellows today.
See you tomorrow.

Good evening folks.
We had a long morning and then got down into some warmer
water and found sign of Yellowfin Tuna.
So far we have only found one area of porpoise but we
managed 34 tuna from 15 to 22 pounds . The action was pretty good for a while
and then ended. Tomorrow it looks like we will be at Benitos for yellows. Let's
hope it works out.

Good morning folks. Yesterday took a turn for the worse
and left us looking at fish that would not bite. A real bummer after the first
day and the expectations for the second day. We stopped a lot during the day and
tried to stay busy with kelps and anything we could find.
There is a slight sign of yellowfin tuna in which we
caught a few of those but only 5 yellowfin 3 blue fin and 3 yellowtail for the
day.
Any how we leave today for a 4 day trip and have the
option for Cedros if need be.
We will be in today at 9:00 in the morning. We stretched
it out last night hoping for a kelp with yellows but did not work out,

July 23, 2011
Good evening folks.
We have had better than expected fishing today with 43
bluefin from 15 to 40 pounds. Some good action at times but mostly drift fishing
with 1 to 3 going. Heavy losses with the light line to get a bite. 20 pound is
the go to line test. Some guys are doing ok with the heavy line. The 25 pound.
Certainly a turn for the better in the offshore scene. Now if it would just get
consistent that would be nice.
We have another day out here and are hoping for similar
or of course better. With the typical light loads so far this season it looks
like all the boats are getting some action. Like I said hopefully it continues.
Still fishing and hoping for a few more before dark.

Giant Jurel Under Weeds
When the winner of the first place
jackpot is named Fisher, you’d think his catch would be exceptional, and this
one was. Robin Fisher of Lakewood fished under a paddy during his six-day trip
aboard Red Rooster III, and hooked something big.
“Everyone thought it was a tuna,” he
told dock reporter Bill Roecker July 22 at H&M Landing. “When it bit it went
down, down, and kept going down. It made two long runs, too, and when I got it
up to color everyone said, “Look at the size of that yellowtail!’”
Fisher decked his big yellow, and
other anglers took a variety from the same kelp, including bluefin yellowtail
and dorado, but Robin’s toady boy weighed 57.85 pounds on the dock scales, and
brought him first place when skipper Joe D’Acquisto hung the contenders. His
group had limits of yellowtail.
The fight lasted 15 hard minutes, said
Robin, who dropped a sardine in on a 3/0 Owner Flyliner hook. He said he fished
with 40-pound Big Game line and a Pro Gear 454 reel on a custom Sabre seven-foot
rod.
Patrick Fuller of Las Vegas won second
place and the coveted trolling jacket for bluefin of 37 and 14 pounds.
Regular angler Al Jackson won third
place for a 36.15-pound yellowtail, and old-time long ranger Tom Reynolds of
Torrance stood in with the lineup with his 26.4-pound halibut.
“I was fishing for one of those,” he
told Roecker.
“Fishing was good at Cedros,” said
skipper Joe. “We spent two days there and also got some exotics: bluefin and
dorado.”

We fished offshore and saw really good sign of twenty
five to thirty pound bluefin. We also had a kelp with bluefin, dorado and
yellowtail. One of the yellows of the kelp was close to sixty pounds. We are
still offshore today in hopes that the weather coming down will bring the fish
back on the bite. The weather came up a little bit but has backed of to almost

Red Rooster III arrived at H&M Landing
when skipper Andy Cates docked the boat July 16 after a six-day trip.
“Benitos was good fishing,” he said.
“Cedros was OK, and we spent a nice morning at Sac Reef fishing up the beach.
Conditions there looked good.”
Lance Yamanaka of Pasadena won first

on 25-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 25-pound Izorline and 60-pound
Izorline spectra. He used a Trinidad 16 N reel and a Calstar 850 H rod.
Tom Porter of Whittier won second

Good evening folks. Our offshore day was more of the same. Sign of bluefin with no bites. We stopped on different little areas of fish and only one school responded with a Jig Strike and a bait fish that fell off. We made a meter mark stop and were surprised with a 75 pound Opah. Haven't seen one of those in a while . Good eating fish and really pretty fresh out of the water. The Opah got one place JP and the little Bluefin looks to be our trolling JP . So we did get something accomplished today. The weather is choppy and we should be home between 7:00 and 8:00 in the morning.

Good evening folks.
We had another nice day of yellowtail fishing. Today action was untill the evening after making a move to Cedros. the morning at Benitos was ok but the sea lion's were a little more aggressive and kind of spoiled it.
Cedros was no slam dunk but we did get to see some great slide type fishing where everyone has one on and the stern is yellow with yellowtail. It was really a good time and good action. The fish were a bit bigger at Bonitos 18 to 25 pounds as the fish at Cedros were more like 14 to 16 pounds. Still a lot of fun though.
With the Yellowtail urge being satisfied we are headed up to the beach and hoping for a few Seabass. We have some live squid so we are hoping for the best.

Good evening folks.
We had a nice day of yellowtail fishing. Well, actually until lunch. After lunch we did not catch much, the whole place went dead. But this morning, good action on 18 to 22 pound yellows, a few bigger as well. We are giving it another day yellowtail fishing. We scooped some squid today in the mix of the yellows. Hopefully we hook a couple Seabass on them tonight.

Rookie’s Supercow Gets Gyotaku
Rookie long ranger Alec Robbie hadn’t
been out for more than eight days (that trip was on the Rooster with Bill
Roecker and got Alec into the Sportfishing Calendar for July 2009), but that
didn’t seem to matter as he caught three giant yellowfin on the Red Rooster
III’s annual June Heat excursion. The fish weighed 314.8, 285.5 and 221.5
pounds: not bad for a rookie.
The big fish was used for a Gyotaku
print custom-made by Peter J of Newport, shown here in the photo.
Robbie told Roecker he only got
sharked once on the trip, which says something about his luck, because everyone
else had many more contacts with grinners. Alec won a new Accurate ATD reel,
since he got his supercow on an Accurate trip with an Accurate reel.
The college student used sardines on
Mustad 6/0 ringed Demon circle hooks. He fished with 130-pound Blackwater
fluorocarbon, 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate
30 reel and a Calstar 770 XXH rod.
“He took me down to my last 20 wraps,”
said Alec. “The clips were on the backup rig. He fought for 45 minutes and
stayed outside the whole time. He took me around the boat once, and he came up
on the bow.
“I expected tough fishing. I put in a
lot of time at the rail and stayed out there at night, and it paid off with the
221-pounder that I got about 11 PM when everyone else was in bed.”

Rooster Whacks Tuna
“Coach” Cliff Clark’s annual eight-day
Beefer trip honored deceased chef Jorge Nicifore this year, and Coach had some
art commissioned for Jorge’s family and the 28 anglers who made the trip.
Jorge’s family was at the dock to meet the boat and pose with the picture.
Skipper Andy Cates guided the
eight-day trip, and he weighed the catch at H&M Landing July 10. His anglers had
limits of tuna and yellowtail. One of the yellows was a monster of 57.5 pounds,
likely the largest of the season so far. It was caught by Bob Hohman of San
Pedro, on a sardine and a 2/0 Owner Gorilla hook, his best yellowtail ever.
Nick Montilepre of Corona won first
place for a 78.6-pound yellowfin tuna. The fish ate his sardine on a 5/0 ringed
Owner Super Mutu hook. He tied that to 50-pound pink Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon and
60-pound Izorline, and fished with a Daiwa Saltist 30 reel and a custom Truline
eight-foot rod.
Ernie Osuna of San Juan Capistrano won
second place for a 76.9-pound tuna. Ron Chaing of San Diego got third for a
76.6-pounder, and Scott Marachael of Long Beach took a special fourth place
(trolling) jackpot for a 76.3-pound yellowfin tuna.

Good evening folks. We finished off the tuna fishing by 1:00 PM and started heading up. We made a couple of stops on the ridge and now are breaking down the gear for the ride home. Another great morning of fishing. I can't say the caliber was as heavy as yesterday but it was really just perfect for what we had planned. We are heading up and may look at the area where we had yellows on kelps. Not to catch more but to check it out for the next trip. Nice weather right now and we are hoping for more of the same.
We will report again tomorrow
Good morning folks. The internet was offline the last 2 days so no live reports. Yesterday was the best fishing we have seen in quite a while. Starting the morning with a mix of fish from 18 to 70 pounds. That shortly turned into more 40 to 70 pounders with hits on 25 to 30 pounders. The afternoon brought straight 40 to 70 pound fish with a few bigger mixed in.
It was right on the corner fishing. The fish were swimming all around the back of the boat and picking off the sardines at will. We ended up with an epic day of fishing. The weather was fantastic. Pretty much a classic 8 day trip scenario.
So far this morning it is a little slower but we are picking at the 50 to 70 pound fish and expect similar to what we had yesterday afternoon.

Good
Evening
Folks
We had a
good day
of
scratch
fishing
on tuna
and
yellowtail.
More
tuna
then
yellows.
It's
been the
best
sign of
tuna
yet. We
had a
couple
of tuna
from
thirteen
to
eighteen
pounds
with the
rest
being
seventy
or
great.
We may
Have a
couple
pushing
a
hundred
pounds.
We hope
that
tomorrow
is the
same or
even
better.
Wish us
luck. We
will
report
back
later.
Joe and
RR3 Crew
We
arrived
at the
the
rocks
this
afternoon
and had
a shoot
at the
yellowtail
and a
couple
of tuna.
It
seemed
like
things
had died
down by
the time
we
arrived
and are
hopping
that the
morning
will
bring
better
action.
The
water
has
warmed
up a
little
bit
sense
the last
trip so
things
are
looking
up in
that
sense.
We hope
more
tuna
will
arrive
or the
ones
that are
here
bite a
little
better.
We will
see
tomorrow.
Will
report
back
later.

Good
Evening
Folks
We
fished
offshore
today
and had
a little
bit of
sign but
no luck
on
putting
a tag on
anything.
We we're
in good
water
and saw
plenty
of food
for the
fish. It
seems to
me that
they are
down so
we are
going
down to
the
stones
to see
if we
have
better
luck
down
there
and will
wait for
the bft
to pop
back up.
The
weather
is
beautiful
so we
are
happy
for
that.
Wish us
luck
tomorrow
and keep
your
fingers
crossed
that the
tuna pop
back up.

Good
evening
folks.
We had a
fun day
today at
Cedros.
We had a
couple
of
drifts
in the
morning
for 15
to 18
pound
yellows.
Then
found an
area of
better
size
fish, up
to 35
pounds.
Unfortunately
they
wouldn't
bite. We
sat and
watched
them
boil
around
for as
long as
we
could.
Landing
only
four
fish.
Then
checked
out
Chester's
Rock for
a couple
of 15
pound
yellows,
back up
to the
Island
for an
evening
of bass
and
watching
an
occasional
yellow
boil.
The
weather
was epic
, nicest
day we
have had
with
sunshine
and no
wind.
Tomorrow
we will
be
trying
for
Bluefin
tuna,
wish us
luck .
Hopefully
they
turn on
tomorrow.

Good
afternoon
folks.
We had a
good
morning
with 110
yellowtail
and 6
tuna
from 50
to 80
pounds.
We had
all the
ammo for
the
tuna, it
just
doesn't
seem
like
there is
much
there.
Squid
fishing
was good
last
night
and we
had
plenty
of
those.
It
didn't
seem to
buy us
any more
bites
than the
day
before.
Although
happy
with the
day and
heading
up to
Cedros.
We are
going to
give it
the day
and then
finish
off in
the
Bluefin
grounds.
The
weather
is nice
now

wind and
rain
most of
the

Good
evening

We got
in here
early
enough
to give
it a
full
day. We
picked
53
yellowtail
and 9
tuna.
The tuna
are what
looks to
be our
Jack Pot
contenders.
40 to 75
pound
fish.
The
yellows
18 to 25
pounds.
It was
windy
all day
and
hopefully
it comes
down for
the ride
up. We
plan on
giving
it
untill
lunch
tomorrow
and then
heading
up to
Cedros
and
finishing
off with
hopefully
a few
Bluefin.
P.S.
Charlie
picked
off a 70
pounder
on the

was

Good
evening
folks.
We are
in
travel
mode
right
now. We
spent
the
morning
in
search
of
another
school
of
Bluefin.
The
weather
came up
and made
it
harder
to work.
The life
was
still
there it
just
seemed
like the
fish
were
down for
the
morning.
Same
bird
life and
water
conditions
just no
sign of
fish. We
looked
around
untill
10:00
and
decided
that
Alijos
will be
our next
stop.
Hopefully
the
water
has come
up in
temp and
some
tuna
have
moved
in. It
would
really
be
exciting
to see
and
catch
tuna at
the
Rocks. I
know all
the
upcoming
8 day
trips
are
eagerly
waiting
for the
news of
yellowfin.
The
Bluefin
fishery
is still
a go and
we will
give it
a go at
the end
of the
trip. As
the
weather
comes
down it
will be
easier
to
relocate.
We will
report
again
tomorrow.

The

came in
at 315.3

caught
by
Laurens

of San

whose
friends
told
Bill
Roecker
he was
on his
first
two-week
long
range
trip.
“It took
45
minutes,”
Rhinelander
told
Roecker.
“I
thought
he was a

hooked
about 40
of them
the day
before.
He ran
about
200
yards
after he
was
hooked,
heating

pretty
good.
Then he

he only

everyone
else was

He used
130-pound
Izorline
spectra
on an
Avet 50

and a

Bob
Michener
of

got his
221.4-pound
in a
half-hour.
It bit a
kite-flown
squid on
a Mustad
9/0 7691

and Bob
used
130-pound
Izorline
and
130-pound

spectra
on an
Accurate

a Seeker

Big Boys Bang Baits
The Loftus-Martin charter with 24 anglers aboard Red Rooster III to the Hurricane Bank and the Buffer Zone returned to H&M Landing March 23 with a fine catch of yellowfin that included 14 tuna over 200 pounds and 236 wahoo.
“It was a productive winter trip,” said Cates. “There was low traffic down there, and fishing was good for wahoo and tuna.”
Dan Pope of Buena Park caught two big ones and won first place for his 283-pound tuna. The other weighed 243. He said he fished mackerel on 9/0 Mustad 7691 hooks tied to 130-pound Maxima and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He used a Penn 50 VSW modified by Cal Sheets and a Calstar 755 XH rod wrapped by Fisherman’s Hardware. He said the fight went about 45 minutes on the big fish.
John Aviles of Tracy won second place for a 270.8-pounder. He also got a 264.8 and a 277-pound tuna, but the big one was shark-bit. It might have weighed nearly 300 pounds had it not been missing a chunk from its back.
Aviles said he got his fish with mackerel on 9/0 Mustad 7691 hooks, with 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One Spectra on a Penn 80 reel tuned by Cal Sheets. He fished with a Calstar 760 XXH rod.
“The winner took me around the boat twice,” he told dock reporter Bill Roecker. “He took me around the anchor five times. He was a tough fish.”
Pete Fellini of Santa Paula won third place for his 266-pounder. It bit on a mackerel and a 9/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Blackwater fluorocabon and 130-pound Line One Spectra. Pete fished with a Sheets-modified Penn 50 SW reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXXH rod.
Bob “Scrappy” Michener of Oxnard continued his quest to reach the 50-cow mark with three nice ones: 244.4, 261.4 and 261.8 pounds. He said he baited mackerel on 9/0 Mustad 7691 hooks, with 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He fished with an Accurate 50 W reel and a Seeker 6465 XXXH rod.
Tom Jackson of Norwalk bagged a brace of cows at 228.2 and 243.8 pounds. He wasn’t available for comment.
Rich Gallimore of Santa Paula took a 237-pounder with a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook.
“My best fish,” remarked Rich. “It was a walk on the wild side. He pulled me around the boat four times.”
Bob Milleson of Lawndale also got his best fish, a 203-pounder. He said it bit a mackerel on a 9/0 Mustad 7691 hook on 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Spectra. He used a Sheets-treated Penn 50 W reel and a Calstar 760 XXH rod to take his first cow in a half-hour.
Ron Hirao of Huntington Beach whipped a 203-pounder in a half-hour, after it bit a sardine under the kite on an 8/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook. He said he fished with 130-pound Izorline Spectra on a Penn 70 reel and a Calstar 765 XH rod.
Dan Sunderland of San Marcos got his first cow, a 201-pounder, in 40 minutes. He baited a salami mackerel on a 9/0 Mustad 7691 hook tied to 130-pound Maxima and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He fished with a Cofe-modified Penn 50 W reel and a Black Steel Seeker 6463 XXXXH rod.
